For the first time in my gardening life, I'm growing some pollenless sunflowers from seed among the common heirloom varieties and am finding them to be better cut flowers. They last much longer in the vase and don't drop yellow pollen on the furniture. In the garden, surprisingly, the bees absolutely love them--although these sunflowers don't contain pollen, bees are apparently attracted to their abundant nectar. I was also surprised to find the spent flowerheads of the pollenless sunflower filled with seeds!
Seeds for various types of pollenless sunflowers are widely available nowadays at various online seed and plant vendors. They'll be a regular addition to my flower garden from hereon in. The variety pictured here, 'Sunrich Orange F1'', was grown from seed purchased from Harris Seeds online.
